Iron Pot Bay Wines, Tasmania

This year, Iron Pot Bay Wines is celebrating 20 years of operation.  We want you to share that celebration with us.  Like all wine producers we have had some great years and some difficult years.

Iron Pot Bay Wines pioneered unwooded white wines in Tasmanian the 1980s. At the time, industry colleagues advised us not to do it – that no-one would buy the wine. The unwooded Chardonnay went on to win best white wine in the Hobart Wine Show in 1992.

We have always specialised in white wines but in 2003, we decided to produce a small quantity of Pinot Noir after requests from our cellar door customers.

We have won our share of awards and our Pinot Grigio and Gewürztraminer were served on Qantas First Class International flights for two successive years in the 1990s.

Our signature wines have become our Pinot Grigio and the Gewürztraminer, although the Kyra Sparkling Chardonnay/Pinot Gris has been a favourite with many.

In 2002, due to problems with cork taint we were one of the first vineyards in Australia to sell a sparkling wine with a crown seal instead of a cork. We still miss the pop of the cork.

The bad times include the 2006 October frost which set back our production dramatically. As a small operator we have had to confront all our crises head-on.

For 20 years it has always been interesting and exciting and we look forward to more good years of production and great wines.
